Brief Overview
My preferred video, which aligns with the central theme of our learning design subject area, is from Khan Academy. The nice thing about them is the accessibility that they provided beyond YouTube by visiting their website, which also provides the same video but gives options like YouTube with captions but also provides timestamps and transcripts. I would have initially preferred to refer to a crash course that provides lots of imagery in reference to what they are teaching as well as a bit more in depth when talking about specific mental disorders. However, since we are referring to one video, the Khan Academy video covers many mental disorders, from neurocognitive to mood to others categorized differently at a surface level but covering some major functions of that disorder.
What activity could you suggest that they do after they have watched the video (designed)? What type of knowledge or skill would that activity help develop? What medium or technology would students use to do the activity?
the activity or assignment that i would recommend after they’ve finished watching this video would most likely either be a blog post or discussion post enabling them and others to share their findings and thoughts about the chosen mental health disorders. Firstly students would be required to write about 2-3 chosen mental health disorders that they want to know more about that were discussed in the video, this would give us knowledge on where the engagement is when focusing on mental health. As well as showing us that at least 2-3 mental health disorders of their choosing are being learned more so in depth. Questions that would be required to be answered on these posts would want to be less so restricting that way it does not limit the answers. For example
- What is your chosen mental health disorders and some information on its history
- Symptoms and factors that can influence it
- (is it biological, inherited, experienced at any point in life?)
- Can and how to manage chosen mental disorder.
- (some mental disorder might require more intensive care: Schizophrenia, bipolar)
- How to identify symptoms?
- Are there resources available?
After this the need to respond to another peers post would be required because it could inform them about a mental health disorder they did post or look into as well as sharing your findings.
How would students get feedback on the activity that you set? What medium or technology would they and/or you use for getting and giving feedback on their activity?
Using a platform such as BrightSpace or WordPress allows for discussion posts to be created and easily navigated through their user interface and respond to others as well. This works both ways for students on what technology they would use and as instructors would use. You can use both applications on handheld devices, personal computers, and laptops.
How could the video have been designed to generate more or better activity from viewers or students?
The video is not too lengthy, so that saves time for students and provides a really base level of understanding, which is why I would want students to further explore their chosen topics a bit in their own time in order to answer the activity questions. However, one of the shortcomings is how much information is packed and might prove difficult to pay attention to the content being provided. A fix for this might be to provide more imagery that goes along with the content being taught.
How will you address any potential barriers for your learners in the use of this video to ensure an inclusive design?
Most of the barriers might specifically be related to technology access since Khan Academy does try to account for most of them, and to combat such a problem would be to have a system to sign out devices and provide a physical hand-in system.

Hi Gurman!
I enjoyed your blog post and watching the Khan Academy video. As I also mentioned in my blog, I believe a discussion activity is the best approach as students can apply and question what they learnt from the video. Focusing on 1-2 mental health disorders would help students become more familiar and confident with the material especially when comparing to other disorders they will learn about down the road. Additionally, requiring them to comment on another peer’s post is a great idea as they could share any similarities or differences between their chosen disorders. In terms of feedback, I think it’s beneficial to post this activity as a discussion post on brightspace or a blog post on wordpress so instructors and peers can interact.
